Choosing a Hong Kong Company Tax Agent: Five Questions to Set the Scope

Before appointing a Hong Kong company tax agent, confirm the service scope, pricing basis, audit coordination, document responsibilities and handling of authority enquiries.

Before appointing a Hong Kong company tax agent, compare five points: where the service starts and ends, what the price includes, who coordinates audit work, who supplies each document, and how authority enquiries are handled. Put the answers in the engagement letter so that scope, fees and responsibilities are clear from the outset.

Define the service before comparing fees

“Tax filing support” can mean very different work. It may cover only filing information, or also bookkeeping, financial-statement preparation, audit coordination, submission and follow-up. Ask which records the company must prepare, what is included, and which work is separately priced.

Compare the pricing basis, not only a total

Request a written quotation that identifies the work, documents, communication method and circumstances that may result in additional work. Transaction volume, cross-border activity, record quality and related-party dealings can all affect the work required, so a single headline price is rarely enough for a like-for-like comparison.

Coordinate accounts, audit and filing

Where different providers handle bookkeeping, audit and filing, agree how records will be transferred, who follows up missing documents and how each stage connects. The company should retain bank records, contracts, invoices, marketplace settlements and expense evidence in a form that can be reconciled.

Agree document and communication responsibilities

The company remains responsible for providing complete and accurate business information. Before appointing an agent, agree the document list, named contacts, update cadence and the process for forwarding and responding to official correspondence.

Common questions

Does a company have to appoint an agent?

That depends on whether the company can organise complete records, understand current requirements and complete the necessary steps after receiving official notices. If it appoints an agent, the scope and responsibilities should be clear first.

When should a company start comparing agents?

Starting before the first accounts are prepared or an official notice is received usually gives more time to compare scope and organise records. Actual timing depends on the company’s circumstances and current official requirements.

What remains the company’s responsibility?

The company must still provide complete, accurate business information and respond to requests for supporting records. An engagement does not replace the company’s responsibility to manage its underlying facts and documents.
